Kinda been tossing around the idea of selling my Suburban. Its a 2001 with a 5.3 engine, has about 120,000ish miles on it. Its a 2wd LS trim package, has 3.73 rear end. I purchased the truck in January 2006 for $16,900 with 52k miles on it. Since then it has always had Mobil1 synthetic oil in it, and for at least the past 2 years I have been running Amsoil XL Series in it.
As far as repairs, I have replaced the battery several times, most recently in January of this year. I replaced the AC Compressor and a few other AC parts along with it in June 2011 (with brand new Delco parts) and I replaced the water pump at the same time.
Other upgrades that I can't exactly remember dates on include:
Front and rear drilled and slotted rotors with Wagner Thermoquiet ceramic pads
2006 OEM Electric fans with OEM Relay harness
Blackbear performance custom tune
145 amp alternator (used)
Auto page alarm with remote start and 2 way paging
Custom blue LED backlighting on all interior panels and switches in the dash and doors
Front air dam/valance from a 2006 Suburban LTZ along with the fog lights
6000k HIDs in the fog lights and the low beams
2010 Sierra OEM 17 inch six spoke wheels with Yokohama Geolandar AT tires
The transmission was just rebuilt in 10-2012
03-06 DL3 turn signal and power folding mirrors, custom wired to work on my 01 truck
T-Rex polished billet grill ( overlay style) and upper bumper cap grill
7 inch roof mounted flip down monitor with a DVD player mounted in the center console where the factory cassette deck was mounted
Alpine CD player with USB input, AUX RCA inputs ( currently connected to the DVD player) And full speed IPod control
And probably a few other mods/upgrades I forgot about.

I'm just trying to get an idea of what you guys think I could get for it. Looking at used car ads in my area, other 2001 Suburbans are selling as low as $4000 and as high as $10,000. Of course the $8,000+ ones all have 100k miles or less and are the LT trim.

I don't want to sell it ( mainly because I know its in such good condition and its very reliable for its age) but I am in a financial bind trying to get my wife the medical care she needs right now (she was recently diagnosed with Huntington's disease) and trying to pay all of our bills plus my own medical bills has us in a bind now.

Do what you've gotta do, Scott. But, is $5-6k (or even $10k, if you somehow managed to get that much) from selling the Suburban going to make a meaningful long-term dent in the accumulating bills?

You're still going to need something to get back & forth to work (and NOLA), though. Is the Altima the vehicle you could do that in, reliably? If not, relying on it as your main vehicle probably isn't the best thing to do..

If you're thinking about getting rid of the Suburban and getting a "beater" to drive back & forth to work, just keep in mind you'll probably by buying some repairs when you buy the beater. So, it may not save you much, in the long run.. :dunno:

Good luck making the right choices for you and your family! Keep being strong for her. She needs that more than anything right now..

Not sure you should sell it but I can help you raise a little cash if you want to sell the valance and lights. I can swap you back the stock version and lights too, if you are interested.

Good clean 01 Suburban should fetch about 6500 - 7500 real world dollars. Maybe even more if you find somebody who appreciates the mods.

We have actually been discussing selling the Altima too. I figure we can get about 9-10k for it. We can't sell both, we HAVE to keep one of them. Just trying to see all the pros and coins of selling each one. :dunno: And they are both very reliable vehicles. I would not hesitate to jump in either one and drive across the country at the drop of a hat. (If I had the gas money:lol:) But the Burban is FAR
the better road trip vehicle due to the massive interior room and more comfortable seats.

And I know selling one of them will not solve all our problems. But my reason for thinking about this is because I need surgery on my foot. My ankle is all swollen and hurting and I have just been ignoring it because I know my family is depending on me right now with my wife unable to work. But the week before last, the pain became unbearable so I finally went to the doctor. After doing an expensive ass MRI, he says my tendons are all messed up because of an old injury. My ankle bone broke and healed incorrectly ( he said it could have happened YEARS ago) and now my foot and ankle is basically all fucked up. Only way to fix it is surgery. Buy then I will have to stay off of that foot for 3 months. I cannot afford to be off work for 3 months with no income. My work doesn't have short term disability, and all our savings are gone. That's how we got to talking about selling one of our vehicles so we can pay our living expenses for 3 months. :dunno:

Myself, based on what you just said, *I* would lean more towards selling the vehicle you can get the most out of and keep the one that is the better road vehicle, especially with all the up & down the road you guys will be doing for her treatments, tests, etc..

Three months is a long damn time to be off work without any savings built-up.. :uhoh:

Not really looking to get rid of my valance. But I do have a set of GMT800 DL3 power folding, heated, turn signal mirrors that I will sell. They have puddle lights and white painted mirror caps too.

I'm good on the mirrors. Mine are heated and have the puddle lamps. That's enough for me on those. Thanks though.

Damn it, we just got that set up for the kid's truck.

Wish you had some seats!

Only think he is missing now.
