You say you want more overall driveability, you don't necessarily get that with a cam. Cammed 5.3s get pretty peaky with their power pretty quickly (and they're not torquey to begin with), and that's the opposite of what you want in a heavy fuggin brick. A really mild cam (the 212 218 that Sam runs) and a mild converter (2800-3000) would probably give you a satisfying increase in power. You don't need headers, and you don't need to run 93 (I still run exclusively 87 in my truck).

From what it sounds like you want out of the 'Burb, just a stock 6.0 and a good trans to back it up would be a good choice if you want to spend the cash, driveability would DEFINITELY be increased there with all the torque.

I picked up 3mph and .3 in the 1/4 with a cam swap on a stock setup, which is roughly 30rwhp. Got a good tune and picked up 3 more mph and .3. I have the comp 212 218 low lift (xr265), you can use LS6 springs which are cheap and last a long time. The 212 218 does not lose or gain any low end but picks up everywhere above 3k iirc. Idle is stockish.

You will probably net close results with headers. I didn't notice any MPG difference with the cam but it can't help. If your state has emissions testing or inspections headers might not be a good idea. Doing the work myself the cam swap was around $650 including an oil change.

You do not need rockers or lifters, that's old skool stuff.

How would headers affect emissions? I have headers and no cats on an 04 and i still pass. :pimp:

IDK, we have nothing emissions related here. I figured they might be dooshers about LT's.

You betcha
We need a cammed suburban around here. I agree the 5.3 is too small and the 'burban is too heavy to get you enough torque to be satisfied without doing a blower on it.
I'm in the boat that would recommend a junkyard 6.0 iron block. There are some really nice truck cams for that displacement that would put a smile on your face. If you get a cam spec'd out by a builder don't settle for a low lift cam - I'm really not a fan. If you go that far do a high lift and install good springs. You would be putting over 300/300 to the ground at that point which is a very noticeable gain.

I am still in the planning/ wishing process. I would like more power from the Burb. The Blackbear tune did help out some, but I am still wanting a bit more. I don't exactly have a lot of cash laying around so I will have to go the least expensive route, (or fill some cans with all my change for the next few years). I think I need to join up over on LS1tech and PerformanceTrucks and do some searching and lurking fir a little while to gain some knowledge about increasing the output of these engines.
