With N45 injectors you are talking 87 horsepower. You can do better and whether you have had success with a 4bt or not, it truly is a better choice for what you want to do

Detroits are cool, but wouldn't be my first option for an engine swap. I'd rather take a look at a Cummins. Apart from the 4BT which may be deemed quite heavy for a 1/2-ton, there are also the B3.3/QSB3.3 outsourced from Komatsu and the QSF2.8 and QSF3.8 which are a Cummins original design.

Not sure how Diesel-friendly is your local DMV, but you may remember, it's technically viable to swap a mechanically-governed engine into vehicles newer than '95 but it's not fully legal, and there is also the EPA emission standards. Anyway, if you wouldn't mind messing with an electric harness, you might eventually also look at electronically-governed engines from those cab-forward Japanese trucks (Isuzu NPR/EcoMax, Mitsubishi Fuso Canter, whatever).
