In my 2002 Silvy, somewhere down the line I want to start giving my interior a facelift. Along with a new aftermarket head unit I would like a new steering wheel.

Is it feasible to swap out for one with radio and volume controls(and cruise if possible) with just pluging the wiring harness in at the base?:dunno:

If so what year and model of Chevy should I be looking at?

I know u have to have a compatable head unit I just don't know how big of a PITA to do this (if it can even be done) and if all the wires run down the steering column and then split for horn, cruise and so on from one single plug. If all this can be done I would then obviously want a different turn signal arm with no cruise.

Thanks in advance.

I'm almost certain that it would involve replacing some wiring harnesses to make the steering wheel controls work on the pre 2003 models. Scottyboy would probably know. Might drop him a PM.n

I think that if that was an option for your year... the wiring is already there.

If it was "NOT" an option for your year... then you will also need the harness from whatever year you get the donor wheel from.

I think the Denalis and Escalades had audio controls but doubt its a simple swap. Probably SOL on the cruise control.

What Matt said on the Escalade....
I think they had steering wheel controls.
Be sure to also get the harness that goes up into the steering column.

If so, you could probably find one in the wrecking yard.
If you do go that route... be sure to get the VIN NUMBER from the vehicle you take it off of....
If it needs to be re-programmed... you will need the VIN to put into the TECH 2.

I have seen it done on other forums. You need to get the controls, the airbag clockspring, and the wiring harness from a 2002 Escalade, or a 01-02 Denali. I don't think it needs to be reflashed or programmed. The 03+ trucks need the reflash for sure, since they have the databus architecture. You will America need a compatible OEM head unit, or a PAC interface to go with a compatible aftermarket head unit.

Thanks guys.
Yeah ScottyBoy the aftermarket HUs I have been looking at have that PAC as an option and it's what made me think of this fiasco.:ohnoes::D

Good heads up again Jim on the TECH 2 shit. I will DEFINETLY get a VIN when/if I go this route. Better to have it "just in case" rather then"wish I had".:(
