Looking at getting a shop air compressor. Basically going to be using the usual air tools, 1/2" air gun, 3/8" air wrench, DA sander, cutoff wheel tool.

I did some research online and it seems I will need a 60 gallon unit. My question is since this isn't a daily use item and not for a business how does the lower model units like Kobalt, Campbell Hausfeld, stack up to the bigger brands like Ingersoll Rand and Chicago Pneumatic.

Anyone out there have one in their shop and how is the reliability of these? I was looking at putting outside on the back wall of my garage with an awning covering it.

Suggestions, ideas????

I have the Ingersoll Rand 60 gallon. It is nice and quiet, I love it. I have had it about a year now, there are pics and a thread on here somewhere.

My dad has a 80 gallon vertical craftsman one and it works great it's just not super quiet but that's expected with an air compressor.

I'd say since it's a weekend toy you could do a lower brand and save some cash there unless you want one of the expensive ones

Not to hijack the thread but is there a place where you just buy the air tanks. I know you can replace the electric motors. I was a large compressor unit for one for free but I would still need the tank and electric motor.

I also have an Ingersoll Rand that's lasted me for several years now. You sound like you're not trying to spend too much since it's an occasional use item. You might find something from Ingersoll Rand's used equipment. They still sell it direct so you don't have to worry about it not working or anything.

You can see the website here at Ingersoll Rand.

I have a husky compressor from home depot that has worked fine for my needs. Mine is the 30 gallon model so I can't go balls out production style with my air tools but that's not what I need anyway. I don't know how comfortable I would be leaving it outside though. I don't have any hard evidence to back it up but my tank seems to be made from thinner metal than the more pricey units. Leaving it outside like you plan could lead to rusting through the tank quicker if you get a cheaper one.

I use my 30gal Craftsman almost every weekend for grinding, impact, wrenching, painting, etc. Cost $280 during their sales. Works fine for me, and I'd say I do more car work than the average person.

Now, if you're going to do some sanding, or real heavy grinding that requires constant use, then you'll need something just a little bigger.

Hey Nick! Did you pull the trigger yet on that compressor yet? If so, what did you decide on?

I was thinking of getting one too, (Christmas wish list, the wife keeps asking)

Yep, he ended getting a used Kobalt. There is a thread somewhere.
