Given the power of the automotive lobby, they will probably get something like that pushed through. Though, they could only really do it for new vehicles after the change to the copyright law. What they'll probably do is to license the owner the vehicle the use of the code, like most software is now (you don't actually purchase software, you purchase a license to use it). So when you purchase a vehicle, you'll need to sign a licensing agreement for the software in the vehicle.

I do not see the logic in this.l, must be my feeble mind.

If I change parameters in my ecu, that's my; map, tune, etc. Just like I change a sound file or background in say, Windows. Yes it would be some manufactures program or code, but now I customized it for my use.

If I want I could just say f ' it and get Megasquit and run my own custom ecu.

I think the "copyright infringement" they are referring to is the reverse engineering the companies who make the tuning software are required to do to make it possible to adjust the MAP, etc.

It's similar to the "illegality" of using software to rip a backup copy of a copy protected DVD or BluRay you actually own a copy of for archival purposes or just to make it easier to access the movie, without the FBI warnings, other trailers, stupid menus, splash screens, etc. :dunno:

the way I see it is like this....once they sell a vehicle...its just like any other product...if I pay for it then I own it, lock stock and barrel, its mine to do with as I will...if we want to fiddle, tune, de-tune, or just set it on fire then its our rite, once you sell something you no longer own it...that's just the way it is.

Its stupid how they want us to stop modding OUR cars. They don't own them anymore, why should they have right on what we do with them?

I believe the bottom line is:

As more and more systems become automated and controlled by computers, it will naturally become more difficult to customize them. Pretty easy for them (manufacturers) to make control units virtually tamper free without it being prohibitively expensive for most people to alter them.

As it is now, I'm sure 99% of the newer vehicles on the road are not modified beyond simple bolt ons - if that.
