Does anybody have tips or pointers to replace the pitman on a 97 K1500 when the steering gearbox has to be removed cause the nut is too close to the crossmember to get tool on it to loosen?

I know the gearbox has to be removed at point in time.

Use an impact and a puller after you get the box off. It's actually not that difficult.

I feel your pain. Took my truck in to have the idler arm, idler arm bracket and pitman arm replaced. It would have cost an extra $200 (in labor) for the pitman arm because either they had to drop my aftermarket suspension OR (like in your case) pull the steering box. Have to save up for it.:(

You need a front end alignment when you're done(or at least that's what the shop said) and IIRC I read to tie your steering wheel off with the seatbelt to help keep the wheel in place.
