i.e. The Camaro doesn't sell in high volume, but it sure as hell gets people in the showroom. THAT is what GM needs right now more than anything...people in the showrooms.
The Camaro is not a halo car. It is a volume seller that also is capable of getting people in the showroom. ALL GM vehicles need to do this.

Killing R&D would be the WORST thing GM could do right now Matt.

Truck wars are good for us when the manufacturers start trying to out do the others, we as the consumers win. Battle on Detroit.

Sitting back not doing anything is why in the 90's and early 2000's the big 3 were getting their asses handed to them for the foreign companies. The had a mind set that no matter Americans were going to buy American, well as it turns out people started buying quality. Since then everyone in the game has picked up on that and now it’s a fairly even playing field on quality. Most people still think that Toyota and Honda have the best quality, but they are all pretty close now. The big 3 need to do something that says hey come look at me, and Ford did that with the Raptor, all 3 have been doing that with Challenger, Mustang, Charger, and the Camaro.

R&D and the resulting HALO cars and trucks are what make manufacturers move forward rather than fading from view like Isuzu, Plymouth, Oldsmobile... etc.

You have to keep moving the target further out of reach and trying to one up the competition. Some may say that Ford should not have built the Raptor but pick up ANY automotive magazine and see what they are talking about. Hell, Car & Driver even did a road test of the Raptor this month.

Marketing 101.

In terms of the Volt I agree...they are too far along to stop anything on that car.

As for the Baja...well...GM wouldn't be missing out on much. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to bolt on some shocks and make the LCAs out of a different material.

I am not saying GM should kill R&D....but right now they need to focus on R&D that can be applied to ALL of their models...not a truck that'll sell 1200 units a year.
