Well it looks like it's my turn. My 2005 Silverado 5.3L, Z71 is putting out the P0449 code. It put out the P0446 code 6 months ago and It was easy to fix, since the Purge solenoid was under the hood and easy to replace. I've printed out the downloads from the first post and hopefully I wont have to remove the truck bed. Thanks to everybody who's passed on all the great info.
Zembonez....thanks for directing me to this site, from TGT (dbgun).

The purge valve under the hood it is only out take of the system. The one what is in the midle of truck above the thank is in take valve and you must have this purge valve somewhere. Under the hood I have at the same place and takes 5 minutes to replace.
Sorry man but that is only one purge valve so far you two of them to work properly. It is like home vacuum is in take of air and then is out take of air and dirt stay in between.

So here's my update along with my 2 cents looking through my "retrospectoscope."

My light has NOT come back on but here is an interesting tidbit that you might want to keep in mind.
I first started having trouble with P0449 about a year ago and was able to get the light to go off using the Seafoam additive I mentioned in a prior post. Now that I have actually replaced the part, I have notice an increase of about a mile per gallon in mileage. This is based on the computer in the truck calculating it for me - not on a rough guestimate.

So, even though the light goes out, once the signal is there that something is wrong you should probably try to fix it for the sake of gas prices.
I conservatively estimate that over the year, I would have save about $189 in gas or about two tanks full and that's with gas averaging $3.5 a gallon. It's now almost $4 in my area.

Hope this helps someone save some $$$$. (Would have bought a fair amount of pizza and beer- or a nice bottle of scotch).

So, First found this Thread about a Year ago when I started getting the P0449 Code on my 2000 Chevy Silverado Z71 1500. I never got around to replacing the Solenoid, as, I am not comfortable removing the Bed, or Dropping the Fuel Tank. Just thought I would "live with it".
Well...I had a "Stuck" Fuel Filter & had bought some FREE ALL penetrating oil to free up the frozen nuts on the Fuel Line.
While waiting, for no apparent reason, I decided to spray the hell out of the Purge Solenoid area because I hated the fact that I KNEW what was wrong, I could SEE the Part, but I couldn't access it.
Guess What? After over a Year of the SES Light being on because of the P0449 / P0440 Codes, the Light went off! It has now STAYED off for over 2 weeks (came back on the other day when it was raining, but went back off again).
Could it be that the Penetrating Oil actually penetrated the housing & Freed the Stuck Solenoid?
I don't have the answer, but I haven't replaced the part, and I'm no longer getting the code.
I have 360+ Thousand Miles on this Baby and it runs like a CHAMP!

Hi everyone! I just joined today and found this forum because I googled for that P0449 Code. Just bought my '05 Silverado 5.3L at an auction. Nice truck and nobody touched it because of the engine light. Truck ran only on 7 cylinders. Replaced a coil this morning. Now it's on to the evap solenoid. Great write-up btw. Confused though on the whole '06 Suburban part. Which on do I get now? :dunno:
Get either or the cheapest one, there are a few part numbers that will work without any issues. One you will have to buy some hose to extend the filter box, the other one comes with the stuff already on it.

This is similar to the one I installed. http://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-214-2082-Canister-Solenoid-Valve/dp/B000S2SKIY/ref=au_pf_ss_1?ie=UTF8&Model=Silverado%201500|491&n=15684181&s=automotive&Make=Chevrolet|47&Year=2005|2005&carId=002

You'll need some hose and clamps but that should do it.

Bigredmariner, the part you listed from Amazon, looks exactly like the one mounted on my truck. Well, except it has the filter box that you have to route over by the transmission. Thanks for the help. There is a vid on youtube that shows a guy replacing this part. Very helpful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH00NyHb6Fc

The vent solenoids seem to move around depending on bed length and body style. You shouldn't have to pull the bed if you have an extended cab/short bed like mine. I believe Regular cabs cram it up over the tank.

The solenoid itself is the same, just the little canister is different among all these parts, some have remote filters/vents some do not. If you want to buy a cheaper one and swap it onto the correct body, it's very simple to do.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, my P0449 turned out to be a broken wire leading to the Purge Solenoid under the hood. A pinhole in the insulation lead to the wire corroding and breaking.

db, thanks for that video. I think I'll add that to the OP, very helpful and shows more than anything we have here in this thread.

Just replaced my solenoid and filter and guess what? SES light is still on and code 449 still on. Wtf???? Does anyone have a schematic of the wiring that's involved. There are 2 wires leading to the connector. I figure that one of them is corroded or running a short. Help!!! Please. Have to get the vehicle through an emission test. And I'm stumped. :dunno::dunno::dunno:
