P0449-How To Replace Evap. Vent Solenoid

    I recently had my Check Engine Light (CEL) come on in my 2006 Chevrolet Silverado. I read the code and it was a P0449 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Vent Solenoid Control Circuit , the local dealership looked at it and told me it could cost upwards of $1200.00 to repair.

    I was out of warranty and couldn't afford to pay that much for a repair that was only triggering a CEL. My performance was not affected and I drove around for almost 30,000 miles before finally tackling this issue myself. I did hours of searching various forums for the right procedure and finally gathered enough information to get it done. This whole repair took less than an hour to do and required no special tools, except for the code reader.

    Below is a list of parts that I ordered from gmpartsdirect.com along with some attachments that I saved to my computer for reference. Each attachment has good pictures and was handy in locating the part as well as performing the repair. The first attachment refers to code P0446 - EVAP Vent Solenoid Valve Control System which you may or may not experience, this was the exact procedure I performed to clear my P0449 Code. The second attachment was prepared by Ed: [email protected], and was also very helpful. Thanks to all for sharing the information with us.

    9438383 (1) 5/8" Heater Hose $ 23.00
    15620999 (4) Hose Clamps $ 1.49

    *** The heater hose and hose clamps can be purchased at any local parts store, this may save you a little money if you are doing it.****

    I understand that this is a common problem? There usually is not a workaround otherwise.

    Correct, no workaround that I ever found. It will not greatly affect anything but you can't really bypass it on the cheap. Thanks.:thumbs:

    That should be all the info you need to do it yourself. It's a common problem on the GM trucks. It's easy to do yourself and a lot cheaper than having the dealership do it. Print or save the info if you need it later you got it. Start to finish it took less than an hour.

    I realize this is an older thread, but I wanted to say my thanks for sharing the info.

    I've been staring at a cel since last fall and just plugged in the diagnostics this morning so I can get a state sticker.

    Found P0449 along with a vent solenoid valve packed full of dirt and dust. I used the part #s you posted and the repair info to get this fixed this afternoon. Took me longer to remove the bed than it did to do the actual fix.
