Oil Sampling Tips?

ok well my oil and filter have reached their 5000 miles. I'm going to pull a sample and send it off. As I have never done this before I'm looking for any tips for taking the sample besides have the engine at operating temp and wait a few seconds as the oil drains before taking the sample.

It's about that simple.

Have some rags handy, of course, to wipe off the oil on your hands. Then follow the direction for packaging the sample

Well i got 2 free kits from Blackstone so I'm going to use thier sample bottle. But I found out i can get a pre paid sample kit from Caterpillar with TBN for about 10 cheaper. No need to get a money order and I get results the next day via email.

Yeah i mean I changed mine every 5-7500 but seems like sending off samples that often is crazy

well if you only change you oil every 25k like with amsoil its just reassurance that the oil is ok. An oil sample can give you a heads up on a coolant leak not visible because its inside the engine.

When the trend flattens out I skip a change. Been doing it for years. I have caught some failures before they got too bad. My last truck had failing AFM lifters, and I caught it with a sample.

My trend right now is decreasing copper content. Oil cooler leaches into the oil on newer engines.
