I believe Forum rules state you have to start a thread asking for recommendations.

We'll all suggest getting whatever we have/had on our truc:tmc:k

Anecdotal evidence gets thrown around disparaging all options :gunguy:

You'll wind up getting whatever the tire guy can make the most $$ selling you:paranoid:

We ask for pics and tell you the tire you got is pretty good, offering some other anecdotal evidence.

Repeat for next set of tires :repost: :jester::jester:

Those Nittos look pretty good though :D

Yeah, but it seemed to be a mostly "black wheel" discussion. :)

and I forgot it was there :rollin:

I just wasn't sure if it was directed at me. Plus I didn't feel like making another discussion about it until I was ready for new rims and tires.

these are the 305/55r20. So, I know i bought these tires used at somewhere between 75 and 50% tread left, but they are just not good in snow. Even if they would be good brand new, I need to have them stay usable throughout their life. The width of the 305 is doing me no favors, but they clog up super fast. I need to figure out if i want to play the winter tire game, of find a hybrid AT/Mud that will clear the snow better. The Mickey Thompson MTZs i had on my TJ were awesome in the snow, but I don't want to go full mud tire for towing.

Karl, I found another contender today. Toyo, as you know, is the mother ship of Nitto.
Have you looked at the Toyo R/T? I touched it today at the tire store...me likey

Yeah, I looked at those too when i first discovered the concept of "hybrid mud/AT" last year. everywhere I can find comparisons of the ridge grapplers vs the R/T, the grapplers are preferred. the other big thing for me at the time was that the nittos generally have higher load ratings in the same size. I looks like toyo now has a 12 ply 305/55 now too. used to be they just had the 10 ply that was giving up 500 lbs of rating vs the nitto.

Looks I'll be ordering the tires tomorrow. Doing my last minute research before pulling the trigger, I decided to go to the 295/60R20 rather than 305/55R20. Reasons being:

higher load index
$150/set cheaper
slightly more sidewall/less pinched on the rim.

Pics to come! :)
