That's awesome. I don't have the space for a fishing boat, but something like this could be pretty damn practical.

Yeah, the engines can also be interchangeable. It can be in a go kart one day and on the boat the next.

Have you seen one for a 6.5 Briggs?

Not personally but he does sell the kits for them too. That engine will probably have a 3/4 inch shaft.

Made the trip out to Canyon Lake today.

This is what I saw when I showed up. Looked kinda gloomy but at least the water was smooth.

Here is why I don't care much about boat ramps, merely water access and a safe place to park the truck.

I put in near one of the lower marinas and ran past Potter's creek and up the river a ways. When the gas tank ran out I decided to refill and turn around which was nearly 4 or 5 miles one way. I think I only burned about half a gallon total.
This was the last of the engine's break in and with my boat, me and gear I could get a solid 8 mph on almost any water, 9 on really smooth water, nearly 10 on smooth shallow water and 6.5 pushing into the wind and relatively big waves on the way back. That trip back had me nervous and I used almost every trick I knew not to get swamped. Luckily the canoe is extremely stable and buoyant. I know my trip back wasn't as bad as a few other people's. I saw one sail boat almost get blown over and some larger motor boats getting hit hard out in the middle of the lake.

That lake sure is low. Glad it worked out well!

Yeah, but is made some fun boating. The canoe handled surprisingly well when I was weaving through the trees. I was actually able to pass a pontoon boat today that was trolling in the main channel. After weaving through the trees I found a very shallow mud plateau on the inside of the turn and set that 10 mph record. Now I need to find a flat bottom jon boat and see how fast it REALLY goes. :naughty:

Wow, forgot to update this thread.

Since the last update, I've made a few modifications. I put a manifold breather filter on the valve cover, which made a huge improvement, and DIY intake filter that was a little coarser. It only breaths air a few feet above water so there isn't much threat of dust. Next I had added the throttle cable from a lawn mower that worked just like a standard boat throttle. I also just installed a little tachometer/hour meter today.

It appears that the 3600 RPM governor is a little slow to kick in. :jester:

Set the top speed record here.

On my last trip I brought along my brother's old 10 foot Sears jon boat and set a record speed of 9-10 mph cruising and 11 mph top speed...sounds slow but it sure felt fast weaving through tree stumps on the San Marcos river. Now I'm going to see if that limit was reached because of an RPM limit or power limit. I may also build a faster boat soon since my canoe is so heavy and slow. I would like to buy a jon boat/trailer instead though, they are just more than I can afford to spend right now.

10-12 mph sounds perfect for that rig. Looks like it's getting pretty sorted out.

Took it out to lake Austin last monday after adding a tachometer. On my big canoe I could cruise at a solid 8 mph. Sometimes hitting the low 9s.

Gonna take it out to Lake Austin again tomorrow if anybody local wants to meet up. :tmc:
