4.6 and 5.4 modular engines have a terrible record of dying at high mileage. Over 150K is risky. Are there engines that go way past that and have no problems? Sure there are, but the majority are failing. I'm just saying that I would not buy one that already had that many miles on it.

Well after the input from here and from a Ford forum, I think I will continue my search. I don't have the money to just throw new tires on a new to me truck. Plus I was a little worried about the mileage, they will run for awhile if they are maintained correctly, but I have no proof of that buying used. Hopefully I can find something that will fit my needs before to much longer.

What do you guys think I should look for? I would really like a lifted truck, I know most are against buying one that is already lifted, but I am not if it was not beat on terribly. I would like to spend less than 10K on a truck, extended cab is a plus, definantly has to be 4x4, I'm not picky on brand names. Thoughts?

Look for something with reasonable miles and few modifications. They are the best platform to start with on a used truck. No lift if possible...

People selling modded trucks usually want a lot more for them. Spend the money on a low mile rig instead.

Probably smart, I would probably end up dumping more money into a higher mileage lifted truck. Maybe I can save the money up to buy a lift, along with talking my wife into it.

Like I said before. The right one will come along. The 01' was def priced high and I would have the same concerns.

I just want to make it clear that I have no hatred for Ford. I've had excellent luck with my Fords! It's a shame such good trucks are saddled with the engine that isn't terribly long lasting. I don't mean to cut Ford at all here.

I see a ton of trucks (being in Texas) at auction since I buy cars for a living. The early 2000s GM 5.3 4x4 trucks often have 250K on them and are still going strong. The transmissions are not necessarily any better than Fords offerings, but the 5,3 will go for 250,000 miles with virtually no issues. That darn engine runs forever. With GM the fuel pump is the main thing to look for at about 140K.

I'm just offering up what I see.

I understand That you are not brand bashing. I know these trucks are not power houses but I think they get a bad wrap. I have a little over 120K on my 5.4L and it has never left me stranded. The only complaint I have is the cats are plugged and ssince they have 4 of the mother fwonkers they are pricey to change.

I think if that truck were not lifted and/or modified it would not be a bad route to go. (for less money of course)
