When I first read this I thought clogged cat, but since it has been removed that is out. Black fuel out of the fuel filter isn't a good thing. Good thing you changed that.

The monster is almost back to normal. I have to reagjust the timing. I didn't do that good of a job repairing the vacuum hose for the map sensor I guess. I tapped up the old line and put it on there and had the big boy purring again. I still plan on cleaning everything up in the TBI this weekend.

Good news that it's running good again. When replacing to vacuum hose to the MAP sensor get a little extra, never know when those plastic lines going to the idle speed control solehnoid & throttle kicker are gonna break(those are the small tubes going to the base of the TBI.

Also, timing is 4* BTDC (with the wire under the dash disconnected).I have mine set at 6*.Most GM big blocks respond well to a little more advance, might have to run 91 octane gas though,I do.

We had the timing set around 6 or 7 degress. really woke that truck up. well it did after we fixed it from how the last owner had the distributor set. He had that poor engine advanced as far as the distributor could go. He really didn't take to good of care of the truck. pretty obvious with the timing and the lack of maintenance. Any ideas on what to check next to keep it on the road? Also how long do you guys think the 4l80e will last when the fluid smells burnt?

I'm not much on transmissions,I just do the regular maintenance and cross my fingers. As far keeping it on the road I think I'd change as many of the fluids as I can.....coolant(flush & replace),change the differential gear lube in both diffs, brake fluid, power steering fluid, etc.

I'm not sure if you're aware of it but these 3/4t burbs are very capable of road.I've had a lot of fun with mine.If you'd care to watch and have some free time check out my You Tube channel, search for Gary B or 95K2500.

I'd hate to pay $50 to change the transfluid then blow the tranny up a week later, thats why I asked. but I'll look into seeing how much it'll cost to do everything else.

I'm sure the k2500 trucks and burbs are very good off road but I can't test that since the closest place to go off roading is crawling with cops handing out tickets.

In a previous post you said the fluid smelled burnt.
In my humble opinion, it would be dumb to leave that fluid in the transmission.

You ALREADY KNOW it isn't any good.

I would change it as soon as I possibly could.... that would be a high priority thing to get done.

Changing fluid that is burnt or has alot of clutch material in it is your choice. I usually don't do it, because even though the clutches are toast, the fluid has enough crap in it to keep it going. Every transmission I change bad fluid in, doesn't last long after. Now, I have had a slim few that worked afterwards. IMO, don't change it, save the money and put that to the rebuild or a replacement.

You on borrowed time either way.

is there anyway that I can drop a mark IV and a th400 in my engine and tranny's place? Theres a lot more of those then a another gen v with a 4l80e. would I be able to get the tailshaft to work with the transfer case? or could I just take the the internals of the front axle out and drive it like that?
