When I was 21 I went to work for my company's Bayliner dealership as Svc Mgr, and got to learn quite a bit about used and traded in boats back then. Since then, on 3 different occasions I have nearly bought the type of boat you are looking for. All 3 times I have moved on, just because I couldn't find the one I wanted for what I could afford. Salt was always the damn issue here and in the NW where I lived.

River boats are easy to pick from. Lake boats are easy, usually.

Finding a clean one that hasn't had serious saltwater issues is tough, Dave, but I bet in your area it will be a bit easier.

If I had to do it right, it would be twin outboards and verifiable service records that it was flushed properly every season at least (of the saltwater). Those are super spendy, though.

If you can find the guy that just had his in the lake, and never in the ocean, that would be cool. Should be easy for you in your area unless they trailered it in from the coast! You can always have a Marina verify that with a good inspection. Demand that a reputable Marina do an inspection on it before you buy.

Good luck brother, boats are awesome, but can be a huge financial burden if somebody sticks you with the wrong one.

Thanks for the humor and the info. I will probably go to lake mead and see what's there for sale when I get back. Boats showrooms scare me!

You can usually find someone really wanting to get rid of a three to five year old boat and save about a third off of the original price... sometimes even more.

I agree with all JIM is saying. My family has had a boat as long as I have been around and still do. It's some we all love doing together. Its great fun and very relaxing (unless you get a sail boat  ). I would recommend getting something a little newer. Older boats will start showing wear in the hull and the fiberglass will crack. I'm sure even more so in your area with the hot sun. Boats depreciate very fast and bottom out after a short time. You could find the same boat over 10 model years that would cost about the same price.

When times get tough the first thing to go is the toys. I bet you could find a great buy on a 5-10 year old boat with low hours. Good luck in your search.

If you'd get an outboard, Evinrude would be the best option since Yamaha phased out its diesel outboards for the American market. At least Evinrude E-TEC motors have a nice power-to-weight ratio...

But if you'd prefer an inboard, Mercruiser has some nice options. A friend of mine has a 26-ft fiberglass boat with the 350cu.in. SBC with a Mercruiser trim.

We bought a used Bayliner, 18'er IRC, was a good boat until we took it out the first time. Turns out the original owner didn't believe in flushing or preventative maintenance. Had to have the engine replaced due to salt water corrosion that ate the manifolds and got water into the engine. Lesson learned, don't buy used, buy new and have a warranty to fall back on. Payments might be more but at least you can enjoy it and not have it broke down and never get to use it. Boats are serious money pits. We learned the hard way. :(
