It won't ever be in my driveway, but I do like it. I think it has a lot of potential if the price doesn't run people off.

According to the reading, it costs about a 1,000 dollars more than a low end Corolla or Civic.

But you can also buy a basic Corolla or Civic for less than a new Cruze — about $1,000 less. And GM may have to persuade some customers to forget about the Cruze's predecessors — the Cobalt and Cavalier.

You're very right! When I typed that about price, I was thinking about the Volt:facepalm:

What are they going to do with the Cobalt? I always liked that car. I though it was supposed to take the place of the Cavalier.

When will Dodge finally wake up and have a small, cheap entry-level car again? They haven't had one since they dropped the Neon back in '04 or '05.

The Cruze will replace the Cobalt, I think.

It won't replace it, it already did.

VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS
The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze replaces Cobalt as the compact car from General Motors' volume division. Cruze is a 4-door sedan that comes in LS, LT, LTZ, and fuel-economy-oriented Eco trim levels. LT models are subdivided into 1LT and 2LT. The LS has a 136-horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. The 1LT, 2LT, LTZ, and Eco use a 138-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on the LS and Eco. A 6-speed automatic is optional on those models and standard on the LT and LTZ. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, front- and rear-side airbags, and front-knee airbags. Cruze Eco models have ultra-low-rolling-resistance tires and other aerodynamic tweaks designed to increase fuel economy. Available on the LT and LTZ is an RS Appearance Package, which includes fog lights and specific exterior trim. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, remote engine start, and a wireless cell-phone link are standard on the 2LT and LTZ. A sport suspension is standard on LTZ. Rear-obstacle detection is optional on the LT and standard on the LTZ. This evaluation is based on preview test drives of pre-production vehicles.

Well from the rundown of the vehicle highlights it appears they're offering it up to be a nicely equipped sedan if you want. Noticed one thing though. Both the engines offered have the same HP. The standard 1.8 and the Turbo 1.4 both share the same HP? Why would anyone buy the turbo being there's no difference in power? One would think you'd offer your "performance" packaged car with a little more performance. The Civic for example comes standard with a 1.8 140HP engine. The Civic SI comes with a 197HP 2.0 with a much sportier appearance then the standard Civic.

Maybe I'm way off on this new Cruze, but it seems to me that Chevrolet has an big uphill battle when it comes to actually taking Civic and Corolla owners from Honda and Toyota. For the record, it's not just Chevrolet, I'm talking Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge. The Corolla and the Civic have proven themselves for years to be super reliable vehicles that are very affordable. The big 3 have tried to throw their best at them for years now and honestly failed. So I'm curious to see how Chevy's latest attempt goes...

It looks like the turbo 4 hits its peak hp at 4900, instead of 6300. The turbo 4 also more torque.. 148 lb-ft @ 1850 vs. 123 @ 2800.. That's a 20% increase, so the turbo 4 would probably feel a little more peppy. I'm not seeing an "SS" in the lineup, so I don't think they've made a so-called "performance" model yet.. Maybe in a year or two.. :dunno:

The spec sheet I'm looking at shows only the stick being available with the non-turbo and the automatic as the only transmission for the turbo version... Traditionally, I would've thought that would've been reversed, but I guess not..

That's a little more like it. Of course not all compact car buyers are rice boys looking to soup up their cars in hopes to be part of Fast and Furious part 10. I was just thinking the current turbo was possibly the performance version of the Cruze, perhaps there is a possibility in the future for a true performance version of the Cruze. Time will tell.
