I'm kinda thinking it might be related to the sub since as far as I know that's the only thing unique to having a console. Maybe just a small vent to equalize air pressure as the massive sub goes about its business.

I've had those WeatherTech mats in mine for years now and they rock. Though my daughter has discovered and then exceeded their limits. 
That little grill on the console is a microphone that is attached to the amplifier. I'd have to look again at what it does.
I have no idea how they could actually claim the system has a subwoofer. The speakers in my wife's Cobalt put out more bass than that thing.

I've actually been fairly impressed with the stock system. One of the forums stated that the updated navigation head unit they started putting in the 900s in 2012 improved the sound quite a bit (though I'm sure not anywhere close to a decent aftermarket system).
Nice! I have actually worn a set nearly out, and need to replace at least my drivers side. Mine started life in my 07 and got transferred to this one. I am a faithful customer now. They work great
I'm glad that they finally upgraded the stock system. The Bose system originally in mine really sucked for a "top of the line" system. Even my wife commented one time (before the upgrade) that the stock system was "embarrassing".
