Except... They just halted production for 5 weeks due to a surplus. So, of course, when (not if) gas skyrockets this summer they'll be able to say that due to the 5 week halt there's now a shortage, so the price will be higher, and buyers will be paying a premium for one.

dealer were already tacking on a 5k premium when they first came out. Serves GM right, they should not allow customers to be ripped off by the dealer.

Well... GM had nothing to do with that. Dealers are individual franchises. They charge what they want to charge. GM just builds the cars and sells them inventory.

It is disgusting when dealers gouge on a new model. I recall the upcharges on new Mustang GTs when they came out with the new model here. They all do it.

Bullshit. GM could rein in the dealers if they wanted to, but they don't. Other companies seem to have no problem stopping dealers from selling their product for more than MSRP, so why does GM?

Hell, in a lot of states there are consumer protection laws that make it illegal to sell a product for more than the MSRP, but of course the auto industry gets an exemption from those laws. Sort of the same way the liquor industry is exempted from having ingredient labels.

A good friend of mine owns a major Chevrolet dealership here. I've also been in this business for 20 plus years. GM doesn't hold some heavy handed gestapo style control over them.

I've seen this very thing done in dealerships and stores of of all kinds over the years. Manufacturers offer what is officially a "Suggested Retail Price" and retailers price their items accordingly. It's not just the auto industry.

If I own a Chevy store and I want to price each new Aveo at 100,000 dollars, I damn well can.

Nothing says you have to buy it.

Just because it's been done for years by every company doesn't invalidate my statement that if GM wanted to stop their dealers from doing it they could, and that they simply don't want to.

...and they'd get their asses sued off because it's a "suggested" retail price not "you have to sell it for this price, because we say so and we own you" (because they don't).

Like Zem said, no one says you have to pay the price.

I remember seeing over MSRP prices on Camaros when they first hit the street.. the new Mustang GT's.. There was some model of the Miata several years ago that "demanded" over MSRP if you wanted to be one of the first ones to have one. I think the recent Challenger had a similar situation. "If you want to be one of the first, be prepared to pay more for it." Back when I worked in retail, I saw places charge over MSRP for video game systems that were in high demand and short supply..

If you don't like the price, don't pay it.. Wait for it to come down and then go buy one. Otherwise, it's supply and demand at work..
