FE will be garbage...no matter what you do. It has to rev it's brains out just to adequately get up to speed.

And the EPA ratings for that truck are only 15/20.

Yes, 15/20. If it has the automatic...is a hysterical 14/18.

I had a 2000 Ranger with the 3.0. I only had it for 50,000 miles because things kept breaking or screwing up. The auto transmission was toast by 55,000 miles, spark plugs rusted solid in the heads, carbon build up was so severe that it was setting off CEL's. Then there was the piss poor fuel mileage and no power whatsoever.

This truck has a five speed and it needs a little work. I have always owned first and second Gen Rangers. So now I have to learn all over again with this one.

You can easily get 20 mpg or better out of it. I had a B3000 Mazda truck for my work sled for a year and I consistently got 20 mpg or better.
