Well it sounds like the overall input is that I won't really gain anything by changing vehicles. I guess I will just keep what I have and hope my new job pans out soon! :fingersx:

Here's the thing. If a car is not an option, just stick with what you have and drive a little easier and ride the bike when you can.

You just aren't going to find a truck that gets good mileage.

Do you have your factory wheels/tires? If they weigh less than those you have now, your best bet would be to put them back on and like I said, drive a little easier.
No I sold my stock stuff, but those stock 20's were heavy as hell. I doubt I really gained much weight from switching to the smaller rims, I know the tires might be a little heavier but I don't think they are that much were it makes a difference.

FYI, my son's 2004 XLT Ranger, 2 wheel drive, with the 4.0L V6, on a good day, only get's around 17/ 18 mpg.

I own a 2003 Sport Trac 2 wheel drive, that gets the same...the 4.0L are not know for MPG.

I parked my 13 MPG Supercrew, and bought a POS 96 Cavalier, and get around 30 mpg, with a 2.2L, had 155K miles on it, paid 1300.00 for it, and have racked up another 40K on it, with no issues, but I stay on top of the maintenance.

My '94 RCSB 2.2L 5spd S10 got 25mpg in the summer and 20-21mpg in the winter.

My '98 ECSB 4.3L 5spd ZR2 gets 16-17mpg in the winter (that's all I've driven it) and that's maybe 65% in-town. The best I've gotten is 20mpg doing 65mph and all interstate.

A buddy had a ZR2 just like mine except it was an auto and he got 17-18mpg.

Keep your truck and drive easier (you wouldn't believe the difference doing 60mph VS 65mph will make). Other than that, if money allows, get a commuter car. :tmc:

I'd keep what you have, run the living piss out of it so you double what you pay in gas a week.
I'm kidding of course. I would hold onto it though. Like already mentioned, put some highway tires on it, and don't push the go pedal to the floor every time you drive it. When I first got my truck, I'd get over 15 mpg on highway tires. I'm lucky to get 13.5 with the Generals on it. Of course, I can't seem to keep my damn foot off of the go pedal since I have a :bbp: tune either.

I have a ton of experience with Rangers (I'm a super moderator over at RPS).

I've had 3 Rangers. The first was an 88, stay away from those unless you plan on doing a motor/trans swap. My second was a 00 4.0 (OHV) 2wd supercab automatic 3.55 gears and it got about 17mpg combined 50/50 until I started modifying it. After that the best I got was 18mpg 100% highway. My ex had a 02 4.0 (SOHC) 4wd supercab automatic 4.10 gears and it got about 17mph combined.

My current Ranger is a 00 2.5 4cyl reg cab 2wd automatic 4.10 gears (all automatics came with 4.10 gears from the factory) and it got about 21mpg combined before the rings in cyl 3 went bad. It's totally gutless. The 98-00 2.5's with the 5 speed can get closer to 30mpg if you are nice to them. The newer 01+ 2.5 Duratech Rangers get slightly better MPG depending on configuration and are slightly less gutless than the 2.5 Lima that I have.

Stay away from the 3.0 if you are looking for gas mileage. It's lovingly referred to as having the mileage of the 4.0 and the power of the 2.5. It's a pretty reliable engine but so are the 4.0 and 2.5.

The mileage and ability of these trucks are pretty unimpressive compared to the Tacoma. After my 00 4.0 Ranger I swore I'd never get another Ranger but I kinda got stuck with my current truck due to the situation I was in.

Seems that most of the newer trucks get decent mileage, and in my experience the newer Tacoma's have the best overall mileage/power combination. A co-worker of mine had a fully loaded 04 Taco V6 4wd automatic and it regularly pulled in 19+mpg and towed his small boat and jet ski's effortlessly.

I sold my truck because it was parked and costing me $400 per month on the payment alone. I sold it and paid off the little bit I owed. I own a honda now and I get anywhere from 25 to 28 mpg average...not highway.

The way I see it, you really need to get out of a monthly payment. If you can sell your truck and buy an S10, Ranger, or Tacoma with cash then you would really feel better about your financial situation.

However if you are gonna swap one truck for another while keeping a payment and saving $20 on fuel (at most) then I don't really see the benefit. Being debt free is what you need to be when money is tight.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.:tmc:
