Pretty cool. Just goes to show the technology that is out there. If only the government would stop restricting every little damn thing.
If that were the case...we wouldn't have a high-strung, expensive V6 that drinks fuel like a V8...we would have light duty diesels like that in the Jeep Grand Cherokee we had a few years back (3.0L diesel, ~235HP and 375TQ)
Hell no, but it is a valid argument against a traditional V8 if it's durability, maintenance, and reliability can be proven over the next few years.
How so? It's far more complicated yet delivers the same fuel mileage as a V8.
It's a shame GM is drinking the kool aid and implementing these fairy tale engines in the next refresh. Utilizing turbos and direct injection does not magically increase fuel mileage. That's just good marketing to get people to buy that.
What it basically comes down to is something we've known for years. An engine with force induction will have a flat torque curve. That is not new. And neither is the fact that engines with forced induction have a shorter life span with higher maintenance costs.
Bottom line: If GM comes out with their own Egoboost fairy tale engine...I hope they market it as an alternative for a light duty diesel rather than an engine that supposedly increased fuel economy. The fuel economy is not there...but the towing benefits are.
Now...if GM is really smart...they will come out with an E-Assist hybrid Silverado/Sierra/SUV thats
priced right and does not sacrifice fuel economy. GM will print money. First truck with 30+ MPG highway?
