I know of some people who had trouble with the GM diesel cars in the 80's.

I hate to say it, but GM's diesels in the 80's is a major influence as to why diesels are not popular in the USA today!
Weren't the early diesels just a gas engine block with cranked up compression?

I have no experience with the 80's diesels in cars, but I've hear horror stories from my parents who knew people with them.

My boss seems to be set on buying a TDI diesel in his next car. I told him about this coming in 2013, but he said he wants to get a car next year.

I assume you're considering early GM diesels... There is a lot of legends about these engines, but one is that they were developed to be made following some modular production concepts, sharing some tooling from gasser engines, but had a block developed specially for them. Their bore and stroke is not the same as the Chevy 350cu.in. small-block as some people think, for example...
