That sucks man. Hope you get it fixed up soon. The myth that lower fuel levels shorten pump life is a funny one. Every in tank fuel pump is cooled by the fuel flowing through it... not so much the fuel around it. It does make sense that a submerged pump would cool somewhat better, but you have to be really really low on fuel for it to be exposed anyway.

I agree, I also think that low fuel levels causing early pump death is a myth. Besides, I believe the GMT800+ trucks have a small container around the pump that is kept full of fuel to help this sort of thing.
Also, don't cut out a trapdoor in the bed. Get some sawhorses and call over three buddies to help you pick up the bed and move it. Really easy.
