Based on that video (at 2:35), it looks like not only did the car go cockpit first into the catch fence but that the cockpit hit the pole that holds the catch fence..

I've read a couple of things that he was still alive, but unconscious when he arrived at the hospital.. I have no idea if that's true or not, though. Hopefully, he was out of it after impact and - as you said - didn't suffer..

Yeah now that I think of it, I remember seeing someone say Ashley Judd tweeted that he was unconscious but good vitals at the hospital.. (I don't know what affiliation she has with him)
