I just tore my 99 V-Star 650 down, again… Anyway, I got the idea that I would really like to simplify this bike and convert it to a single carb. I can make a manifold but selecting the right carb is tricky. I did some searching and found some one selling a manifold and kit to convert them to a single. But no way am I spending $600 on just the manifold. Especially since I can make one. In my way of thinking I can eliminate all that plastic duct work, fuel pump, and maybe some of the electronics. Any thoughts on this?

Personally I see no reason on earth to mess with a well engineered and working setup like Yamaha uses. I see these VStars with 50K plus on the clock... still running great.

Mine has treated me very well over the past decade and change. Except... when it is time to tear it down. If this bike sits for any length of time I have to tear down the carbs. Even, when I drain them dry before letting it sit. I have drained the tank, petcock, fuel lines, filter, and carb bowls, and it still runs bad after sitting. I tear the carbs down clean, clean them (some times spend money on them) then it runs great until I let it sit again. I am just tired of tearing down half the bike to go through this. Plus, I want to do something with it. It has been bone stock since 1999. I am planning some other mods as well that I think would go nicely with this one.

Solution: Don't let it sit, ride the fWONker.

There are much better projects you could do if you're just looking to tinker, in my opinion.

I agree. Hell, for two years that bike is all I had. Rain, shine, or hurricane, I rode. But since then, there have been times it has had to sit. Like when I was in Iraq, or away from home for other reasons. This last time I had to shut it down becuase it needed some work that i could not afford. Now that I am doing it, I have to address these damn carbs again.

I've seen some folks adapting Brosol/Solex H-30 carburettors from Volkswagens into motorcycles with V-Twin engines.

I had some pictures in an older computer, which I should get a backup from as soon as possible...

I would like to learn more about that. Right now I am looking at a 40MM Mikuni.
