Choke

I have a electric choke and with it not being hooked up if i turn the adjuster towards the lean the flap opens up all the way-but if i hook it up with power it doesnt make a diff. im hooking it right iv checked and it has juice and a ground-but don't move. Can i run it unhooked up but were it goes all the way on the flap back? This must mean the electric choke is messed up?

On an electric choke...there is a wire spring that the current heats up and opens the choke.
It takes a few minutes to heat up and actually OPEN.

If adjusted properly...when engine is cold, the wire spring gets cold and contracts.
That closes the flap.
After the engine has run for a few minutes...the electric current heats the spring and gradually opens the flap as it heats up.

If you have it unhooked and run it with the flap closed...it will be running way rich..

There should also be a choke pull off hooked to vacuum and the fast idle cam. The choke pull off will open the choke fully when the motor starts, if the diaphram is bad it won't work. I hope I said that right, not good explaining without the parts in front of me.

Ok thanks guys-the carb is a 750 eldrbrock electric chock-i have it unhooked and on the adjuster its 2 knots past the middle knot towards lean. Maybe i didnt wait long enough the engine was fully warmed up at bout 180-190 degrees. The flap isnt closed its completely open.

The "FLAP" can only be adjusted "PROPERLY" when the engine is completely cold.
You turn it to where it is fully and kinda "FIRMLY" closed...but not "HARD" closed.

If you notice...the shaft thru the flap is a little bit OFF CENTER...that is so that the airflow to the engine can open it just a little so that the engine can get enough air to run.

As time goes by and the engine warms up...the spring gets got and opens it the rest of the way.
If it has a vacuum pull off, that also helps open it as the engine warms up.

I had a 650 edelbrock and it never seemed to "work Properly", but i never read the manual and just played with it, .... lots.
