What about a Yamaha R6, or maybe even an R1?

I will agree with Scott, street glide is my personal favorite. I am at a point where I have decided my current bike is the last one I will own that doesn't have cruise control and a radio. Only downside of the street glide is the handlebar mounted fairing gets really heavy after a while of riding twisties.

Anybody who thinks the big Harleys are slow obviously has not ridden one in a while. They may not handle like a crotch rocket, but they are plenty quick.

I like the vrods, for same reason, there are not many of them out there

But I would start to kick myself over it if I got one

So I say fatboy

Or do a classic like mine, a 69shovel head, bored and stroked to 96" ported and polished heads dual plugs, weber carb, lein weber cam.....

They have a reasonable low-end torque. Even some compact cars can become a reasonable commuter using a H-D engine. I have even seen some pictures of a subcompact car with the engine of a Sportster 883.

Earlier Harleys are still the coolest ones. After the Twin Cam they're not the same anymore...

WooHoo...something I can comment on!

OK Dave, I'm gonna give you my 2 cents on this since I was in the exact same position about 8 months ago. I went down to the Harley Davidson Dealer on the last nice weekend of summer last year here in Denver, they were having an open house with BBQ, test rides, live bands, etc. I had stopped in a few days earlier because they had a V-Rod Muscle in that I wanted to check out, then they told me about the open house on the weekend and said if I wanted to try different bikes then come back because they were going to have every current model available for test rides.

Now I had already been drooling over the Muscle for some time and had it in my mind that was the bike I wanted, 1) because it is bad ass looking, 2) I definitely wanted a Harley Davidson but something more suited to my generation and not the grandpa look, 3) I had previously came from metric street bikes(R6) years ago and wanted to grow up and get a nice bike to cruise around on, not be stupid or go too fast, but also use as a daily driver, weather permitting.

Well the weekend came, ton of bikes at the open house, got to see a lot of customized Harleys and different models. I had cash in hand, talked to the salesman, he pulled the V-Rod Muscle out and said take it for a spin first.....then we will talk. I said awesome but I know I'm gonna like it, who wouldn't.....................................well I drove it for 30 mins and HATED IT!!!!
Now let me tell you the pros first:
-Very fast bike for a Harley Davidson, not a lot of low end torque but once you get past 2nd gear it flies
-Very comfortable despite the drag style seating
-No overheating issues since it is liquid cooled...something that is very important for you to think about in Las Vegas. My R6, which WAS liquid cooled, still overheated if we cruised the Strip in summer. All the stopping and going, we would shut our bikes off at stop lights because they would just boil in the 120 degree heat.
-Awesome design and styling, looks like nothing else out there, you still get some respect from the true Harley guys since it is a Harley, but few still turn up their nose to them
-Pretty much maintenance-free

Now here is the cons:
-Sounds nothing like a true Harley. It's very quite with the stock pipes.
-Does not have that classic Harley feel.....which in my opinion, should if you are paying the money for a Harley Davidson
-Even with aftermarket pipes, it becomes loud, but does not have that tradition V-twin rumble and idle. A Muscle with pipes came in and had some loud pipes, but was still very quite when stopped and just idling.

To some the cons might not be that big of an issue, but ever since my time as a metric rider, everyone always loves the sound of a Harley Davidson. Other brands try to copy it but can never duplicate it. It is the whole spirit of a Harley and justifies the reason to spend 10K more rather than buy a Honda, Kawasaki, etc that has the look of a Harley and none of the problems. People just want that feel and sound of a classic Harley Davidson.

So I rode a few more bikes that day. Love the Fatboy....especially the special edition Fatboy Denim or Fatboy Low.....buy those were out of my price range. I also love the StreetGlide because I think a radio and the saddle bags would be great for everyday driving and those weekend cruises but they are up in the 20K range so that was out of the question unless I could find a used one.
Salesman was awesome and showed me the Fatbob. I love it, ride was comfortable and it had that Harley look, feel, and sound I was after.......only thing was it was Orange and I hated the color. So I left, sad that I wasn't getting a bike but happy I didn't fork over money for the Muscle than ride it home and be pissed hahaha. Probably for the better though, still looking for a bike but plan on getting one after the wedding in June.....Debra would have kicked my butt if I came home with a bike that day

I think for your size and style a Fatboy would be perfect. It has that classic Harley look and is suited for everyday use and weekend rides.........however just watch the overheating issue during the summer since it is air cooled. New bikes shouldn't have much of a problem but it's something to be aware of, and keep up on the maintenance
