I posted this on another forum, but figured asking here would be a bit more entertaining. I know myself the benefits of a tonnaeu keeping stuff dry, covered, etc. But here's my reason for posting:

Was talking with my coworker, whos going to be buying a truck in a month or two if all goes as planned. He has everything all planned and what not. And the talk of tonnaeus and bed covers came up. His one buddy, claims that having no bed cover is more beneficial then having one. Due to the air hitting the tailgate/inside of the bed, and projecting twords the back of the cab will help to "push" the truck along; Netting better mpgs. Which he has claimed he tested this.

While i can see his point somewhat valid, i still tried not to die of laughter on the inside. I just want to hear your opinions on this (im up for a good laugh aswell). As manufacturers claim bed covers will gain you a few mpgs. I myself havent tested, as conditions are really hard to replicate.

From my experience with or with out the covers , mileage is the same. Mileage did not improve removing the tail gate either.

His point isn't even remotely valid. The force required to reflect airflow would be greater than the force of the redirected airflow "pushing" against the cab (even if his first grade understanding of aerodynamics was correct... which it isn't)

My advice, just continue laughing

I don't care either way, I bought a truck to use the bed, there just a pain in the ass if you ask me.

Used ours with them on :dunno: i couldnt see having a hard cover though. The topper on my other truck is nice, but downsides too. Cant fit the bbq grille in the bed (dont want to lift it that high either) along with a few other taller items.

Ford did wind tunnel tests on this some time back and they showed that it simply does not make a difference. Tailgate or no tailgate, cover or no cover, it's all the same due to the way the air flows over the cab and creates a "bubble" of fairly still air that the rest then flows over pretty smoothly.
