We're in the process of restoring my son's '78 F150 Stepside (thread link in signature). We've got the bed off and we need to rewire for taillights. I got to thinking "Why not add a trailer receptacle since he might be pulling one occasionally. I'd like to add a round 7 pin receptacle with a trailer brake connection but I don't know if we can do that on a truck that old. What components would I need up front to tie in the brakes to the trailer receptacle? Can this be done on this old of a truck? Even if we don't add the receptacle at the back right now, if we at least ran the wiring back there that'd be one less thing we have to do in the future...

Thanks guys!

The only thing a 7 way plug needs that isn't already there in the form of tail light wiring would be a 12V power lead (or a trailer brake control wire if you were going to use one).

First get one of these
Ford

then get one of these
4 Wire Flat to 7 RV Blade (plastic)

Does the truck have any sort of towing wiring or are you starting from scratch?

this /\

Also run red & blue wires(maybe 12 ga.) from the 7 pin to the front of the truck. The red is to charge a future battery on a travel trailer and the blue is for a future trailer brake controller(for electric brakes).

Look at the pic Jim posted and you'll see where they connect.

A friend of mine and I will be doing this same thing on his '77 F250 some day soon.

I wouldn't worry about connecting the backup lights, few trailers have them.
