For one thing though if I was a Lexus driver... I would be e-mailing the auto maker a photo of the crash and ask why the air bags were not deployed.. I thought 5mph was a standard..

Airbags are triggered by a predetermined rate of deceleration. Speed actually has nothing to do with it.

Even so, that collision does appear severe enough to set off frontal bags.

Serious attempts at side impact protection did not happen until governmental regulations forced it in the late 80s. Some manufacturers (foreign ones) started putting side door beams in their cars in the early 80s. Small trucks were exempt from such standards and most had doors that were simple hollow shells like that 60s Pontiac in the picture. Those old cars were cool, but they were MUCH less safe than a modern Kia.

If one of those cars were mine....nobody would get a chance to get a pic of the driver because she'd be dead! :gunguy:
