A friend of mine just bought a 86 ford ranger 4 cylinder with a 5-speed. Does anyone here have a exploded view of the clutch/flywheel assembly? It has a noise in it at neutral with the clutch out, push it in and it goes away. I'm almost positive it's the clutch fork but I
dont work on these little trucks? Thanks in advance!

Could also be the throw out bearing. they can be a bitch to change because the slave cylinder is inside the bell housing, need small hands to disconnect hydraulic line.

Thanks! Finally found an exploded view of the setup and slave cylinder is incorporated with the t/o bearing. Got one ordered and we'll put it in next weekend. That is a odd setup. I never really messed with the little trucks.

That TOB setup is a really odd one. I'd bet it's the problem based on your description of the noise.

I think the spring holding the t/o bearing tight is broken. Truck runs and drives but has a clunking in neutral with clutch out. Tranny seems fine though.

When you tear into it, you should take some pics and post a thread here for future reference. Might help out the next guy!

Now in Scott,LA
+1 on the throwout bearing. If it's not that the next thing I can think of is the input shaft.

I have done a couple of those myself Semo on full size F-150's Fairly simple and straight forward. Yes, IT IS the throwout bearing making that noise if it goes away when apply the clutch to tighten up the slack in the bearing. Had it been a whine in all gears, then got quiet in 4th (1 to 1 ratio), then its the input shaft bearing. Don't be suprised to find the clutch fork is still just fine, since it really doesn't use a fork being an internal slave, and the problem is, the TO bearing itself. You'll need a tool or make a special tool to release the hyd line out of the slave cylinder. Similar to a fuel line too, infact if you have a universal fuel line tool, it'll work.

I think being an 86 it uses a hair pin style clip on the out side of the bellhousing for the hydraulic line. Its small and hard to grip in the space provided, my 88 had that kind of set up.
