I got the case all stipped down. This came apart nicely. It had been rebuilt before. I noticed it had Raysbestos clutches in it, and those aren't factory, so I know it had been gone thru. Bands must not have been replaced though. They look worn and burnt a bit. Everything else looked good. The case is at the machine shop now. Rhonda says I can pick up anytime Thursday or late Wednesday.
Got the jack too. The engine hoist is working great again. And the 8ton was an upgrade. Mine originally had the 3 ton jack. The 8 ton bolted right in its place though. Keep in mind that doesn't mean its rated at 8 ton now. You got consider the geometry of the boom, but still, it should safely be upgraded to a 2 ton hoist now. Bring on the Big Blocks with the T400's connected.
I think i will go ahead and get a new stall converter after all-u think a 3500 would work-considering the tranny be able to handle it with all the work going into it along with the 454 install...u said something bout knowing a guy who would be able to tell me exactly the stall id need for my set up. Im thinking 3500 because im going to have 373 gears with limited put in. I don't think i want to go and reuse that one stall converter an take a chance on that metal shaving that could be in it.

I think I'd go with a 2500 or 3000 stall. 2 big reasons. #1 the weight of the truck, you're going to get some stall right there alone, or at least going to get actual stall on whatever you get. Where as sometimes you get a 3000 stall and if a light car you only get 2700 or so, but the truck being heavier you are likely really to get it. Also, 3.73 is not all that low of gear. Its a good street/strip gear though, and do keep in mind, this is a truck, so likey to be running taller tire which might acutally put you in around the 3.42-3.54 range. You really need to be keeping in mind its a truck and not be comparing it to the Monza. They are 2 totally differant beasts and are going to perform differantly like night and day. #2, you are running a big block. Big Blocks don't turn the RPM that small blocks do. You want a cam with low to mid range torque to keep the RPM down. If you want the 454 to turn over 6000 rpm and not come apart, you got lots of work to do to the rotating assembly. If it were me, I'd be looking for a cam with a power band range of no more than 5500, and shifting well before 6,000 for a stock bottom end 454. Depending on the cam I chose, is where I'd choose what stall I wanted. So figure out what cam you are gonna run first before you decide the stall you want. That's JMO, maybe someone else can give their opinion or advice.

The orginal size rims were 16 and i got 15 so what iv found out it make the 3.73 feel like they are 3.81 and yea can't compare the two they are diffrent. I was going to get some work done on the heads-lighten the valves and go with 1.7 rockers an lighter pushrods and step up on the springs...i beleive alot of guys build the 454 where it can handle up to 8ooorpm but i kinda dont get that according to the stroke a 454 is only good up to 5800rpm-so i was going to build it to handle about 6500rpm but not go higher than 5500rpm in racing yet have the cam designed with as much lift as i can up to the 6500rpm with the least amount of duration so its less strain on the vavle train and wraps out quick-im kicking it all around still and looking for input. i think your right 2500-3000 stall would work-i was just thinking with the gear change i could go up higher on the stall. I want enough to get off the line good and have plenty of get up to go up to 6500rpm but only take it to 5500rpm because of the stroke. thats one advange the 350 has over the 454 it can go up to about 7200 according to the stroke. And the advange of the 454 over the 350 is its torque.that truck weighs just a tad over 1000lbs heavier than the monza and thats about a 100hp not including the air dynamics...might go ahead with the better pistons to run nos and just go with about a 100 shot.-its all still in the working...im thinking of going with a car 454 balancer instead of the trks so it help wind out faster and underdriven pullys...

Big thing to remember on stall, especially on a big block since they don't like high rpms, is to not get to high of stall, so that you don't have to wind the motor up so tight, that when you shift to 2nd gear, your RPM's drop below your power band range then you have to make up ground before you start pulling hard again. This is another reason, along with strength being an issue, that people don't like 700r4's for racing. Big wide gap between 1st and 2nd and many times, you'll drop below power band range. T400 is a good trans for that reason, espeically since you'll need 3rd gear to finish the quarter mile.

I got your text. No, haven't had a chance to hit it yet. OTS was closed Christmas Eve, so I didn't get the bands or spiral snap ring. Then went to see my dad Christmas evening. Today, getting ready for my son to be here, then tomorrow I drive to Ft Worth pick him up, and about the time I get back, time to go to work. Tuesday I have some appts set up to meet with some CL buyers for some parts, but I hope to get on it Tuesday if my dad doesn't need me to go out there and take him to the Dr. Trust me, I'm trying to get to it. I have other projects backed up behind this one too sicne I am not starting another one on top of this one. Its just not a good thing to do. As you found out, you can run into snags and issues when building transmissions. If had room for a 2nd bench, then yep I'd do 2 or 3 at time instead of letting 1 hold up 2 others but I don't have that luxury anymore like I used to.

I did clean up some parts Christmas morning and got some prep work done, but that was about it, didn't make any real progress to speak of. Just about got the solvent bath ready to go.

I'll get it done. Its just been the problems of getting a good case or it would have been done already. I think we got a good one now, so after tommorow I should be able to get to it. OTS will be open Tuesday I'd think so I can get the bands and spiral snap ring. After that I have all I need. Hopefully have it done Wednesday if things work out OK with my son being here. I doubt anyone will jump right on it either, as tranny shops are going to have work lined up, so I'm thinking, I'd probaby have it done before they would anyway.
