Hey all! New to forum and was hoping for some help. I have a 2006 Z71 Silverado and about 3 years ago I had a local 4WD shop change front and rear gears. Came stock with 3:43 and went to 4:10 for pulling 7500# travel trailer. All as been well...never use the 4WD...until couple of weeks ago decided to engage 4H to back a friends boat in his yard (steep getting over curb). It worked okay but was growling real bad and after unhooking boat and getting back into street...wouldn't come out of 4H. I drove a couple of blocks in neighborhood and finally switched back to 2WD. 2WD works okay and actually pulled the trailer to Arkansas and back with only issue being warning on dash saying "Service 4WD." The truck only has 34,000 miles on it! I have a couple of questions....one being...if I don't try to engage 4WD again, could I still have related problems using 2WD only? Secondly....nary a drop of oil (grease) ever leaked from truck but is it possible that just low on grease causing the growling? Oh by the way...I rest Service 4WD message a few times and it hasn't appeared anymore.

I think Jarrod had this issue with his 2006. I know he replaced the actuator that engages the 4WD. He's on a boat headed for Kuwait right now, but I bet one of the other guys here will know for sure.

By the way... WELCOME!

Edit: Not sure if this helps or not. http://www.truckmodcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2290

Welcome man...

And I'm sure someone will chime in with the same problem or some knowledge about your issue

I would replace it whether you use it or not.

Okay. Any thoughts on the growling sound? Heard you should engage 4WD ever now and then just to keep lubricated. Hadn't engaged in 3-years so that theory must be true.

Technically everything that moves when 4WD is engaged, moves under normal use when the wheels are turning. The only thing that might not is the actuator.

Lubrication should not be an issue.
