Yes, the wife's Jeep is AWD. Doesn't even have a shift lever for the transfercase, and lights up all four tires when you get on it.

I like the JK dude, but not a fan of the gear choice. Why 5.38's for 35's? That seems way too overgeared and the pinion is much smaller at that ratio, unless you had plans to go larger on the tires.

That is typically what people say that don't know alot about the JK. The auto trans in a JK has a very very deep overdrive. With 5.38 gears I am still turning less than 2500 RPM at 70 mph on the highway. The ideal engine RPM for these 3.8 liter engines is 2600 to 3200 RPM. I spent today exploring in the mountains of southern Utah, at 9000 to 11000 feet elevation. About 100 miles of todays drive was on pavement, with the overdrive turned off, because it worked better that way. It is definitely not geared too low for highway use, if anything it could be geared lower. The Jeep still downshifts out of overdrive too frequently, and commonly downshifts to second gear on mountain grades. If I had taller gears it would be in second gear half the time. The concern about pinion gear strength is a theoretical concern, I've never even heard of a Rubi rear Dana 44 or Dynatrac Pro Rock 44 breaking a pinion gear.

Oh, and one more thing on the gear ratio. One hundred and fifty miles today, with the overdrive turned off for most of the highway part, and low range being used several times to get through the mud on the off road parts. I got 16.2 mpg on todays trip. I can live with that.

There is a thread on one of the JK forums that compares fuel mileage with different gear ratios and 35" tires. Too many variables to put too much into it, but the 5.38s got better gas mileage on the auto trans JKs than 5.13s, or 4.88s. You get better gas mileage by being able to stay in high gear more of the time. The torque converter on these auto transmissions unlocks every time you shift gears, and each transmission shift eats a lot of fuel.
