That I can believe, all we do to our 9.9 Suzukis is run seafoam through the gas every now and then and let it cough out the old shit, Rev them up to burn off carbon (they are governed because they are rentals) and check oil levels.

My boss says ahhh these are 4 strokes you don't need to do anything to them, don't even worry about the oil"

No maintenance may be true but I still change out my plugs every year or every other year depending on how much I use it. I change the foot oil every season though, that's the last thing you want running low or seizing on you

Also, as far as adding oil to the 2-strokes. We only go through about a gallon a year with our Yamaha and it does see quite a bit of use. However, because it is mainly used for fishing it doesn't constantly get used like it would with water-sports. The motor will use more oil if you run it constantly wide open for a whole tank of gas, but if you use it to troll and take it easy it won't burn as much.

On a side note, I hope I can make it to the boat show this year...

I don't trust any of you fools.

Translated. :D
I trust your opinions, it's just that they are all differing. I like the ease, low maintenance, power and weight of the 2stroke but I like the not having to always top off the oil aspect of the 4stroke. Also, 4 out of the 5 close neighbors on the lake are running Honda 4strokes. They all seem to be happy with them. So I am still up in the air.

I was just fucking with you. I run a Mercury Bigfoot 60 on my pontoon and I'd trade it for a 4-stroke in a heartbeat.

Great thread and info and views here fellas. All I have ever owned was 2 strokes. I currently have a 40 HP Merc with oil injection. I have to say it is pretty efficient on oil usage, like mentioned here in a post, if you have the hammer down or are towing a tube or skier, that's when the oil usage kicks in, but just during regular boat rides, I can get on plane @18/19 mph and run 22 mph at 2500 rpm before the powerband hits, which is around 3000 rpm, and it sips the oil. It's load related how it get's injected.

My reservoir hold approx a quart and a half of oil. I boat every night of the year just about, for a few hours a night. I go about 2 months between adding about a quart of oil to top it off on average.

I have done services on 4 strokes and I like them a lot. Just never had the opportunity to own one so I can't really voice an opinion on them.
