Sounds like you may have had it 180 degrees out of time...
That could be why it was popping back and could also be why the valves are bent...
The pistons hit the valves when you tried to start it.

Notice the smudge marks on the edge of every valve...

I have another head. I'm gonna check it out and maybe just put it on it although the head I just took off is brand new.

That won't do any good unless you retime it...
If you don't redo the timing... it is going to do the same thing to the head that you put on it.

Make sure you check/replace the chain tensioner and replace the chain.

I replaced the chain, gears, and tensioner already.

I replaced the chain, gears, and tensioner already.

Then it is very likely that it is 180 degrees out of time at the cam....
That will cause the valves to be open when they should be closed and they will hit the top of the pistons.

I put it back on time before I pulled the head off. It was off a lot.

I got a call from the machine shop. My head is ready to be picked up in the morning. They still had my old vavles. They were all this bad or worse.
