There's some useful info here, I don't know if you have dial indicators or not so this may not help you. I have all this stuff so taking the measurements isn't a big deal for me. If you don't have dial indicators then you can do it the old fashioned way with using grease as a visual indicator. I'll see if I can find something on that and post here too. Here's the link for a good how to.

This may help too from Richmond Gear.

Here's more on patterns and set-up.

Oh and yes a 1/4 turn on the pinion before it fetches up on the ring gear is extremely excessive and shouldn't be driven unless you just have too.

As the others said, its too much play.

Am I missunderstang the first post, but did you say the new gears have 10K miles on them already?

Those gears may of been toast when you bought them.

take it to a tranny shop, they should be able to fix it cheap and fast if it is not damaged already

Ok guys heres a write up I found for a gear install. Check this out and tell me what you all think.

thats a good write up.. as from what i saw.

Seems pretty easy. I do have a few questions.

The way i took it ther are NO shims between the carrier and carrier bearings. correct? any shimming for the carrier is done between the race and the housing? Also if the richmond gears are trashed then what brand would you reccomend using? The front differential was "supposed" to be "professionaly" rebuilt by axle boys in St. Louis with Yukon gears.

yes the bearings are pressed onto the carrier.. and all shims go between the race and the housing. as far as brands... richmond is a good brand.. yukon makes good stuff too.

Update for the ones that have helped.

Ring and pinion seem to be in good shape.
I didnt have the mag base with me so not exactly sure what the backlash is, but it seems ok.
Pinion seems to have a little to much on preload.

DS carrier bearing has some pits in it and is a little rough, PS is nice and smooth.
The carrier also has some damage. I talked to the guy I got it from and he said that happened when the previouse gear set shelled.

Now for the bad news the richmond powertrax locker has a tooth busted on one of the center pieces.

Now My thinking is the pinion has to much preload on the pinion bearings. Also I think the damage that has been done to the carrier is causing a balancing issue which is the cause of the carrier bearing being ruff.

The guy said that he would send me all the old spiders. But would I be better off getting a new install kit and using the gears from that differential and just regearing mine?
