Ok guys need some more help.

I have a 10 bolt that has 4.56 gears in it that were just put in (I was told about 10000 miles on them) I just put the Differential in my truck.

Now for the Problem. I dont think that they have it set right, When you put it in gear in clanks pretty bad. I assume they have the pinion set to tight, But I am not expert on Differentials.

Can anyone explain how to set these rear ends up? I would like to get this resolved before it fails totally.

Clanks once or clanks as you drive?

If it just clanks once, that could be your slip yoke.

What exactly are you driving again?

Sorry forgot to mention that.

96 Chevy ECSB 4X4.

My old rear end had 277,000 miles on it and it didnt make this noise.

It clanks when put in gears and and also makes a clank noise when turning SOMETIMES. Also hear it sometimes when you snap the throttle.

I checked the u-joints and there fine.

I had my uncle watch the pinion when I put it in gear and he said it had about 1/4 turn of play in it.

Yea I know daddy. Been gone all day and was suprised to see every one else must have been too :D.

I have not Idea what the backlash is set at i havent tore in to it yet. (kind of worried what I am going to find). I just took it on a 30 mile drive and it did good till I got in town and turned the first corner then it started to clank even after I turned it would still do it.

I was looking at O'reillys website and found a bearing and seal kit. It looks like it comes with:\

Pinion Bearings and Races
Carrier Bearings and races
Marking Compound
Brush
Sealant
Pinion Seal

Is there any other kits that I would be better off getting? I wouldnt mind replacing the axle bearings and seals while I am in there. What about the spiders? would it be a good Idea to replace them (with out seeing them)?

Did you put the gear in the rear end.. or just another whole rearend? Quick check for back lash is take the drive shaft out.. and move the pinion back and fourth... you should have a LITTLE play.. but not much. if its real sloppy thats one issue. Idk how advanced you are with differentials....

I changed the complete housing assy. Which I was told was re geared with richmond gears with a master install kit.. and a Powertrax Locker

When you hold your foot on the break and place the Trans in gear the pinion rotates aprox. 1/4 turn then you hear the clanking noise.

I had it on jack stands with the driveshaft removed and tried to turn the Tire it was hard to turn it. (the brakes are not overly adjusted you can slide the drums on and off easilly enough). I could feel and hear something was dragging (like a worn bearing)..

I am quite sure the backlash is WAY OUT as well as the pinion depth. I have never had to set a differential up before though so trying to get a better understanding before i start to tear in to it.

OMG 1/4 turn???? umm.. wow dont drive it any more... if its that extreme you will just destroyed the ring and pinion gear. Either they didnt set the pinion depth correctly or the ring gear is not shimmed correctly...

you should be able to just grab the pinion and slightly move it back and fourth.. not 1/4..... wow! Check and see if the pinion nut is tight.
