'01 Suburban AC troubles

I got 2 estimates to replace the compressor today. One shop said 1260$, and another said somewhere between 200 and 1400, but they would have to thoroughly test everything first which would cost 120$.

I guess I need to figure a way to fix this shit myself. Who has replaced one on a GMT800?

Replacing the compressor is a no brainer job really. Do you have access to somebody who can evacuate the system and then recharge it?

I have never changed one. I've added the junk to the one in my '99, but as far as changing one, the answer is no. Did you google it? I have a Haynes manual that tells how to do it. I could try to scan the pages for you and then post them. I have to go pick my wife up from work right now. So, I guess I can try to scan them when I get back.

That's what I do not have. Both shops I went to today said they wont do it. But at least one shop said they would use my parts if I wanted to get them. Both shops also said that the drier/accumulator and the orifice tube would have to be replaced along with the compressor. All those parts plus the refrigerant plus labor is how they came to those grand totals. I think I could probably change all those parts out myself if the refrigerant is recovered from the system first. But I am still looking at about 5-6 hundred in parts, not counting the refrigerant recovery and refilling. But that's still a hell of a lot better than paying 1200$.

Does anyone know how much oil and refrigerant I would need to fill the system from empty? Once again, its an 01 Suburban with a 5.3 and the rear AC. Or should I let a shop refill it?
