Correct, I did not read the artical, I but I assume you can buy the the heavy equipment manuals right, as long as you buy the auto ones then its fair game, they don't need to be free. They need to be available.

I believe the difference is the level of info given. I'm sure GM, and others, aren't turning over absolutely everything already or this would be moot.

+ 37 TMC points for FABulous use of the word "moot"

Automakers have their rights to intelectual property, that's a good reason for the patents. But not allowing a customer to know how to deal with maintenance procedures is quite abusive, specially after the warranty is expired. I actually understand that there are also some legal issues, since it's "better" to have the customer wrapped around their fingers than leaving them do a wrong procedure which would compromise the vehicle's overall safety, lead to an accident and subsequently a lawsuit...

This conversation is about providing the info to independent repair shops, not consumers directly.

There should be very few repairs that require you to go to a dealer, instead of a regular licensed mechanic who won't take your first 3 born children, your right arm, left thumb, and left testicle, like dealerships do...

If the law passes, there would be no dealership only repairs.

The average hourly rate of dealerships in my city is at least 50% higher than all the independant shops... So I can see why they wouldn't want to let the info out, as they'd have to charge competitive rates.

I'm not sure what exactly independant shops can't do, since you can buy a tech2 for GM... I'm guessing you can do the same for other manufacturers as well :dunno:. They're just expensive as fWONk.

I apologize if that seems like disjointed and pointless post... It's too early in my day for thinking

After all, even without the release of the repair manuals, some redneck engineering would fill the gap :jester:
