My helmet saved my life when I was in my cycle crash. I didn't come to an abrupt stop though.

No, that's not a banana in my pants.
Wearing a helmet here is required by law. But as soon as you cross the border into Texas, its optional. I see way too many people cruising without a helmet every time I am in Texas.
My parents hate the helmet law but I don't mind it.

Like most stubborn bikers I have to admit that I rarely wore mine unless I was on the highway. It was stupid but that's what I did. No more bikes for me though... too many near misses with idiot drivers here. Austin/San Antonio area has well over 2 million people now. Just too many idiots in a crowd that large.
That's the biggest problem and also the biggest oversight for most riders.
There is absolutely nothing anyone can do to control other drivers. That, combined with my first-hand experience with how dumb most human beings are scared me off of motorcycles long ago.
You can say the same for a 50,000 population college town like Stillwater....especially late at night when the drunks (like Justin Blackmon who blew a .24 Saturday night) are out to mow you down...
