Just found this on eBay.

Whipple S/C complete minus the electronics. $1160 is a very good price on this. Others I've seen on Craig's List were $1500-2000. I saw one on another forum go for $1300 and it didn't have nearly as much as this one. Another one on eBay went for $1k, was really dirty and was missing the electronics along with a lot of the smaller nuts/bolts.

I'd like to get one now to use later in my eventual rebuild. The reason being that these are no longer made (and haven't been for years) and I don't want to be scrambling searching for one down the road. Although, if I get another couple of parts, maybe it can go in sooner.

What do you guys think?

It is not inter-cooled (this unit was never offered from Whipple with an inter-cooler option), but I plan on running one (an air-to-water unit; the cooler is like $200 plus a radiator/cooler to mount by the radiator itself; probably have $500 into the setup by the time its done). Another guy did the setup I'd like to copy and he was happy with it. I'll see if I can find it again.


Here's a few inter-cooler setups. I personally really like the second one the most; the third one requires a lot more modification to get the huge cooler to fit.

here's some pics of mine from when I was running the whipple and intercooler, these are the only pics I have, I know they kinda suck and are in-progress shots, I don't have any completed pics of it...

this is when I was doing the install, you can see the whipple output has been modified to point back towards the cab, then there is a kindof spiral piping going from the intercooler to the intake manifold, the blue hoses are the coolant hoses for the intercooler:

same thing, different angle:

this one is closer to being finished, you can see the black ABS pipe running over the intercooler, thats the air filter to TB pipe, I used 3" ABS, but it was a little too big to fit over the intercooler and still let the hood close, so I had to heat it up and deform it into a slight oval. you can see I put some black covering over the coolant hoses, just as a kindof protection layer

thats about all the pics I have of my setup, nothing of the radiator or pump or anything. I hope they don't mind, but I'll put up some pics for 99bluetahoe's intercooler setup that he ran using the same intercooler as me, but installed differently, and James B's massive intercooler setup he used to run.

his is ALOT different though, he fitted a larger whipple compressor and different whipple input elbow on and altered his master cylinder and did a bunch of other stuff to get that huge cooler in there.

Definitely do an intercooler and maybe meth injection. Older whipples are known to be big heat pumps.

I have no idea why they went this route. I guess I'd rather run water lines up to the front of the truck rather than 2" or 2.5" tubing.

What do you think would be best?


I really like this one the best. It seems to have less piping from the S/C to the inter-cooler and to the intake manifold, plus it doesn't look like anything on the Whipple itself was modified.

I haven't set my mind on cooling yet, I just want to figure out if I should go for this kit or not for now. Later, when the planning stage comes, I'll definitely need to figure out what to do.

Good article. From the sounds of it, A2A is great as long as you are moving/have airflow. A2W is more complicated which also equals more components and more areas that can fail. Both systems can only cool as much as the ambient air temp is.

I guess the worst thing that can happen with an A2A is that the compressed air is never cooled and the engine gets that hotter air (when sitting still/starting out from a stop).

Would there be a lag running the compressed air so far (from the S/C to the cooler and back to the engine)?


Maybe I'll have to as the guy that had one of those setups (the first one) why he used A2W and not A2A. He sold his Whipple/inter-cooler setup in favor of a twin turbo setup, but I don't know what his cooling plan is for it.
