All engines use SOME oil. It varies depending on condition and mileage... but some oil has to be consumed to provide lube to the cylinder walls and rings. The oil level in my truck drops about 1/8" on the stick between 5000 mile changes.

Some engines use as much as a quart every 1000 miles. I've never had one that did.
