It goes on to our new car here in NC. At least that is what I have done over the years. Only time it didn't was when they were changing over to a new plate design and we had to get the new plate.

There's still people rocking plates from the 50s on their vehicles up here

Don't see them very often, but every once and awhile, there's that old beater farm truck...

No refunds here. If you don't use them for the year - tough.

Same here.

But here the plate must be surrendered to the DMV upon selling, junking, or totaling a vehicle. If not, you get a stiff fine plus they flag your drivers license. And you MUST keep insurance on the vehicle until that plate is turned in or that's another fine. Another hassle is every time you cancel your insurance, switch companies, or let it lapse, the ins company notifies the DMV who then puts a flag on your plate AND drivers license. Its then up to you to provide proff that you have current insurance and that it was in effect within 5 days of the date the ins company said your policy was cancelled. So its a severe headach every time you switch ins companies or sell a vehicle because either way you need to take a day off work to sit in the damn DMV all day.
I fWONking love Louisiana!

Here in NC you can run a plate from the year of the car like my 65 as long as it is older than 20yrs. This plate I found at a swap meet. Not registered, but I still need to keep a current plate in the car.

My truck's plates have been on my Neon, Blazer and Elantra before going on the truck.

I transferred each of those registrations to the next vehicle.

If I was taking the registration off a vehicle and not transferring it Id have to turn the plates in to the DMV before taking insurance off and give my insurance company a form showing I turned in the plates.

I think the plates get destroyed once theyre turned in.

Here in Minnesota the plates are issued to the vehicle, so when you sell a car the plates stay with it. Although you can transfer special plates (ie, personalized, vetren, Critical Habitat etc) It's a pretty hefty fine to have plates on a vehicle that they weren't issued too here. lol You have to buy new plates every 5-7 years here, and buy new tabs every year. You can also run a vintage plate that has the same year as the vehicle on it, but it has to be older the 20 years in order to do that.

You just transfer them to another vehicle in Ohio. The only reason I got new ones for my current truck, is because the front plate was destroyed in that wreck back in Dec of '09. Zem got the other one for his collection.
