Where do your license plates go when you sell your car?

In Texas, the plates stay with the car and get transferred over to the next buyer. You can't take them off and use them on another vehicle (with the exception of personalized or specialty plates). They stay registered to the vehicle.

What happens to them where you are?

There is no penalty here if you decide to keep them except that the next owner has to buy a new set from TXDOT.

We keep them and can transfer them to another vehicle that we own. Another person cannot use our plates even if it is for the same car.

Depending on the state you live in it's either:

  • Plates registered to the car.
  • Plates registered to the owner.

Odd that they don't do it the same way across the country.

Plates registered to the owner.

I've had the same plate number for years here in Virginia...just not on the same vehicle!

When I bought the sons Celica at CarMax, they issued the licence plate and registered the car with DMV at the time, NO temp 60 day cardboard plate..and no long wait at the DMV!!

When he totaled it, the plates died with the car, and I mailed them back to the DMV and recieved a refund for the remaining time I had paid for the years registration.

No refunds here. If you don't use them for the year - tough.
