How does a 2-speed rear gear work? Are you talking about the rear diff or is there an "overdrive" type unit on the tail of the trans? I've never heard of one before.

There is a switch on the shifter and it goes to the rear end. I would say that it is similar to the tow/haul mode on trucks but just not the transmission on this truck...

I will have to do some research on how it works. But its like adding a little more granny to each gear to get the heavy loads moving.

It basically makes it a 10 speed. You have a hi and lo setting in each gear.

Ah, so it is like an overdrive unit; just in the rear diff and instead of lower RPMs it gives you higher. COOL!

Planetary gears on the rear wheel hubs, just like the VolksWagen station-wagon and pickups from the 50's to '67.

I used to drive one of these but with the Cat diesel. In the one I had you couldnt downshift into first at all...not even if it was lightly rolling. Don't know it that was a common issue or not. The one I drove was brand new off the lot ...for the first 6000kms anyway....
