T is not one to normally go the cheap route on stuff like that. The RCA cable would be a good place to look.

First you need to narrow down to whether the noise is coming in thru the RCA cables or thru the power wire. An easy way to do this is put the radio on aux or whatever you need to do with no music only engine noise. Now turn it up so the whine is very noticeable. Now unplug the RCA wires from the amp and see if the whine stops. If not then the noise is in the amp or power/ground cables. If the noise does stop then its either coming from the radio or RCA cables. To narrow that down you will need another set of RCA cables. Just pull the radio and swap cables on the rear of the unit and just toss the cables over the seats to get to the amp. If its quiet with those cables then then.your cables or routing of the cables is your problem.

i had tears as i read this masterpiece!!!

It is possible to get a bad cable. Once they ship off to China for production, anything can happen.

Are you using the factory ground wire for the new headunit? If so, that could very well be the problem.

Nope. I ran a separate ground wire to the exact location the amp is grounded.

It was originally, but after the first hints of the whine, that was one of my steps to defeat it. Obviously, I am still failing.

Booster cables to the amp ground will tell you if it's the amp

My new sub amp was doing that, but for me it was either my deck, or my rca cables...
The shop installed an isolator or filter, can't remember which, and I've been interference free ever since

Shorten the ground for the head unit. It's an antenna for noise. move the head unit ground to a location closer to the head.
