High speed low drag.
Saw your new engine "sweet" congrats. ok your going to make me spill my guts on this one so here it goes-first off im not doing anything close to what you got either way with the 350 or 454 my wife wouldIs it a 350 or has it been bored or need bored?
If you take a portion of the $2500 that would need to go towards the BBC you could build a nice little 383 stroker. A set of vortec heads and a mild/moderate cam.
I had a nice mild 383 in my Nova to start with. It would run on 87 octane all day long, a comp 292 cam (hydraullic flat tappet) and it would run high elevens in my Nova pass after pass with 3.23 gears.
. First the 454 its sitting on the stand now with already been bored 30 over an having new cam and freeze plugs waiting for the next step.9:2 to 1 pistons, all balanced and reworked with crank turned just good normal stuff you know.Have the heads cleaned up about 20thousanth to give alittle more compression the heads are 1974 large oval NOT peanuts 781. Just going with stock springs but new ones they are suppose to be able to handle up to a 550lift-cam is 112 lobe-268 duration-525lift and good up to 6500 which i won't see past 5800 but thought it help with breathing better...then just the normal stuff-alu. intake-750 holly-headers-electric fan and fuel pump-hei with a weight set....with a beefed up 400 tranny with a 373 limited slip rearend---not anything drastic but impressive all around. The 350 is a 1974 350 also but supposely had been rebuilt by oreillys-well its getting 180psi at the cyclinders and it runs good now but if i was to switch with said above on the 454 drive train the 350 would have just a cam put in(292duration-110lobe-501 lift) and new z28 springs and stronger pushrods with the double roll chain-alu. intake-headers...everything else mentioned on the 454. Im not wanting to tear apart the 350 to see what it has-but im guessing its been bored from oreillys and hot rod said it might would have diffrent cc heads to raise it up also-i don't know but if i got 180psi that puts me around 10:2 to 1 thats pretty much it. Iv been thinking of going with the 350 instead of the 454 because thier hp is really close already in stock form an when i entertain the idea of just using the hydralic lifters the 350 sounds better choice. And the 454 is 2500 away an the 350 is about 500 or less---thanks for the gut spill.lol---i can then put the 454 in the back ground from wives view and turn it into a 427. And that 350 is about a 290 horse just by the compression raise up to 10:2 to 1 an before you add in all the mods. I can get hydralic lifters good up 6500rpm range an thats what i'll do if i go with the 350 and it be a 6500rpm engine.
