So like the title and the area it's posted in . I need some help with gears.

So my grandad was talking to me about my z71 and the gears. It now has 3.42 lockers and i hate them with the 35's on it. What would be the best route to go?

My F150 has upgraded 4.10 gears and i love them. they really make my truck get up and go..

Would 4.10 gears in the 1990 be a good idea with the 35's or should i go to to 4.56 or 3.73 gears?? I'm not real big on gears and dont honestly know which is better. Just know what my trucks have and which i like better

And i'm assuming i have to replace the 4x4 gears up front too? if not i'm sure it would strip something out lol.

I would think 4:11's would be a good choice. Depends on what you plan on doing with the truck.

Yeah, you need to do both, if you don't you will major break something.

Yes you will need to do both before you engage 4WD, you can do one then do the other later but you can not put it in 4WD or you will tear shit up.

I would say with that size tire you would most likely want 4.56 or even 4.88 but I think some of the lifted guys will probably weight in here and give you better advise than I can.

if you plan to occasionally offroad, 4:10s, if its more strictly off road 4:56`s or bigger. if you have no intention of going off road stay the same or 3:73`s. (probly not worth the change with that tire size)

You will certainly have to change the gears in the front differential. I do beleive Jarrod (Bidredmariner) has a great writeup that would be the same if not identical a process to changing all the gears just like your application.

Thanks you guys. yea i dont need it for strictly offroading just the 3.42 seem to have a hard time when towing with the 35's and they dont really lock good when offroading.

I would do at least 4.56 IMO it would really help in the towing area.

It's not a daily driver right? 4-speed auto? If so, I would go with at least 4.56 and seriously consider 4.88 or 5.12

Yea it's not a daily driver. and yes 4 speed auto. just going to be a weekend truck to enjoy doing whatever i please as long as i dont roll it .

So looks like more of you are leaning to at least 4.56 gears then. Would it affect the rpm's on highway any?
